Antes de la conquista, Tenerife no era una sola…
Era una isla dividida en nueve territorios, conocidos como menceyatos.
Cada uno estaba gobernado por un mencey, un líder con autoridad política, social y también espiritual sobre su pueblo.
Antes de existir los menceyatos, Tenerife estuvo gobernada por un único monarca: Tinerfe el Grande.
A su muerte, la isla fue dividida entre sus nueve hijos, dando lugar a los distintos menceyatos. Cada uno de ellos heredó un territorio y se convirtió en mencey, iniciando así una nueva forma de organización basada en el linaje, el poder y el control del territorio. Así nació la organización territorial de Tenerife tal y como la conocemos en la historia prehispánica.

Hoy, muchos de esos caminos, montañas y paisajes siguen ahí… esperando a ser recorridos.

Each was ruled by a mencey, a leader with political, social, and spiritual authority over his people.
Before the menceyatos, Tenerife was ruled by a single monarch: Tinerfe the Great.
Upon his death, the island was divided among his nine sons, giving rise to the different menceyatos. Each of them inherited a territory and became a mencey, thus initiating a new form of organization based on lineage, power, and territorial control. This is how the territorial organization of Tenerife, as we knew it in pre-Hispanic history, was born.
